About Face Theatre: KICKBACK

  •   ,

project brief

About Face Theatre’s KICKBACK festival was conceived as exploring the intersection of queerness and Blackness and was a partnership with Chicago’s ReBuild Foundation to take advantage of their extensive archives of Black history. It was originally planned as a multi-week, in-person performance of short new works. Unfortunately, the pandemic necessitated moving the festival online. All of the commissioned artists were given time and money to reimagine their performances for streaming. For marketing, this meant no in-person photo shoots of the performers or their works.

This provided an opportunity for me to adapt how I used imagery in the company’s marketing. Using the ReBuild archives as a jumping-off point, I curated images that embodied Chicago and its the legacy of Black LGBTQ artists. Combined with some photos provided by some of the artists, I created this collage that embodied the breadth, diversity, and celebratory energy of the festival.

tangible marketing in a virtual time

During this time, most theatres had completely moved both their marketing and their performances online. To stand out from the rest of the sector and to communicate that KICKBACK was being approached as a complete and full-fledged production, I also created and sent direct mail postcards to AFT’s audience. This continuity in the way we spoke to the theatre’s community ensured that KICKBACK was a highly-viewed success.
