The Power of Story

I’m behind in getting some fun things to look at posted here, so in the meantime, I’m going to share with you a post from a blog I read regularly called The Mission Paradox Blog, which is written by a gentleman who works in the marketing department of one of Chicago’s big theaters.

This post is very appropriate to my own vision, which is that story is the thread that connects us all. it is the communal form of communication we’ve carried with us since our earliest days. It is the most powerful method of communication. Enjoy:

The story we tell

I often find myself as the only self described “marketer” in a room full or artists or arts “executives”. The situations always remind me of my previous life as a lawyer. Lawyers (like marketers) are both loved and hated.

We have a strong dislike for marketing as a concept until we need to sell our stuff or spread our idea.

But those who “hate” marketing, or think it’s all bullsh*t or smoke and mirrors misunderstand the concept.

At a core level what we are all trying to do is a tell a story:

“Hire me.”
“Marry me.”
“See my play.”
“Read my screenplay.”

Those are all stories. We are all trying to convince a busy, cluttered, cynical world to notice us and then engage in some sort of action.

That last part is key. We want people to act. I’m fairly confident that you wouldn’t be putting all that time and effort in creating your art if you didn’t want people to be impacted (changed) by the experience.

Telling an authentic, exciting, story about who you are, what your work represents and why people should attend is the first (and necessary) step in that process.

Artistic projects come and go. This week one song recorded, next week another. This month one play produced, three months from now another.

Story endures.

Long after people have forgotten exactly what you did, they will remember why you did it.

So what’s your story? How are you telling it?
